41Cares

41Cares is a community service action committee founded and run by PS41 parents. We design and organize community services and outreach opportunities on a school, local, nation and international level. It is our belief that even the youngest members of our school community can learn that they can contribute to society, help those in need, and make the world a better place.

Got an idea for a community service project that the kids of PS41 can participate in or want to get more involved? Please share your ideas with us by emailing 41cares@ps41.org.

Here are some projects families and students have participated in through 41Cares.

Gently Used and Laundered Kids' and Adults' Coat Drive
Coats collect from this drive are donated to Thrifty Hog to help homeless mothers and their children and to the Bowery to benefit homeless New Yorkers in our city.  In 2015, we collected approximately 300 coats. For more information about these organizations, please visit www.heartsofgold.org/aboutus.html and/or http://www.bowery.org.

Holiday Food Bag Decoration
During the month of October students in Toni Ann’s art classes decorate about 100 bags for God’s Love We Deliver, a non-sectarian organization that delivers meals to people with life-altering illnesses. For more information, please visit
www.godslovewedeliver.org.

Thanksgiving Cards for Seniors through City Meals on Wheels
Make sure that your child visits the crafts table in the lunch room during the month of November
. Cards decorated by the kids will be distributed on Thanksgiving to home-bound seniors through Meals-on-Wheels. For more information visit www.citymeals.org.

Candy Drive for Armed Forces
Have too much Halloween candy?  Stop by the PTA office to drop the extra sweets in one of the large plastic containers. This is a great opportunity to share your Halloween candies with our men and women in our armed forces.

City Harvest Canned Food Drive
PS41 annual Thanksgiving tradition continues as the entire school gets in on the action.  In 2016, donated over 10,000 cans of food - a PS41 record! Individual classes tally up the number of cans collected and Principal Shannon announces the class "winner" of the golden can at the end of the week. For more info visit www.cityharvest.org

Mail For Heroes Campaign
During December, a crafts table is set up during lunch for our children to create a holiday card to a New York serviceman or woman stateside and overseas. Last year over 350 cards were made and present to representatives of teh 369th Sustainment Brigade/Army National Guard.

Gently Used Children's and Young Adult Book Drive
These gently used books will be collected during the bi-annual book fair, so it is a wonderful time to clear off your book shelves while preparing to purchase new ones. The Gently Used books are donated to the children  and their siblings at Reach out and Read Bellevue Hospital.  Each year we manage to donate hundreds of books to The Children of Bellevue Reach Out and Read Program.

Unwrapped/Unused/New Toy Drive
After the holidays we collect new or  unused toys for Ronald McDonald House and the Foundling Hospital.  Families are asked to bring in any duplicate toys or something your child would like to donate to a sick child in need of something special.

Valentine’s Day Cards For Seniors through City-Meals-On-Wheels
A crafts table is set up in the cafeteria for children to decorate special cards for seniors.

Gently Used Soccer and Baseball Uniform and Equipment Drive
Our annual drive to collect gently used soccer and baseball uniform and equipment to help children’s soccer and baseball teams in South and Central America.  Soccer donations go directly to Downtown United Soccer Club (DUSC) while baseball donations go to P3, The Pier, Park & Playground Association.

Gently Used Children's and Young Adult Book Drive
This second part of our gently used books will collected during the spring book fair, another great opportunity to clear off your book shelves, and prepare to purchase new ones before the end of the school year.  The Gently Used books are donated to the children and/or their siblings at the pediatric ward at Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn.

Physical Education Event
Every June, our physical education teacher organizes a fundraiser for a worthy cause.  In the past, money has been raised for the American Heart Association (Jump Rope for Hearts) and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF Walk-a-Thon).
